The American Dream. Is it even a dream at all?

Imagine being an international student coming to college to receive a better, higher education, doing everything you can to make things work, to only have it crumble beneath your feet.

Ever since President Donald Trump came into office, that is happening more often that it should.

Homeland Security went so far as to create a fake university that caused illegal immigrants to come into the country. The “university” had a school website, which included the school’s history, social media, classes and real addresses. This caused international students to completely lose their trust coming into the country.

On top of international students not feeling welcome to the states, they face many obstacles with obtaining their visas. Students can only work part-time jobs on campus, have to prove they can afford college tuition and living costs and register for enough classes. They mainly have trouble with coming into the United States legally and getting jobs.

The United States is becoming more and more unwelcoming for international students. They are beginning to live in a constant state of anxiety because of the changes of immigration policies. A first-year student at Harvard University had every expectation to be a legal citizen of the United States until his visa was cancelled days before classes started. He was being questioned for hours and was asked to unlock his phone and computer, which was when an officer found his friends’ political opposing opinions. That was the reason why his visa was cancelled and was denied entry into the U.S.

I could not imagine going through what international students do. It has to be stressful and exhausting. I can’t imagine walking in their shoes. It is so unfair how they make it so difficult for immigrants to come into the United States because all they want is a better lifestyle. So why can’t we help them? They are coming here for the “American Dream,” but it seems like it is becoming more of a nightmare.
